Semantic Error started as a web novel on the Korean platform Munpia back in 2018, written by Jeosuri. It only got a manhwa adaptation in 2020 after the novel blew up, and the adaptation actually fixed some pacing issues the original had.
Jeosuri chose 'Semantic Error' because it's a programming term for a logical mistake that compiles fine but gives wrong results. That's largely Sangwoo's entire worldview: he follows rules perfectly but can't read human emotions.
In a Q&A, Jeosuri admitted she based Sangwoo's rigid thinking and social obliviousness on her own experiences with undiagnosed autism spectrum traits. She wanted to write a character who wasn't a villain for being different, just misunderstood.
The 2022 Korean drama adaptation on Watcha altered the final arc significantly, adding a corporate espionage subplot that wasn't in the webtoon. Manhwa purists were split—some liked the extra drama, others thought it ruined the slice-of-life vibe.
